Web Notes
Andy Warhol is one of the most recognizable and well-known American artists. A leading figure in the Pop Art movement, his silkscreens of mundane objects and celebrity icons explore the relationship between artistic expression, popular culture, and advertising. Ingrid Bergman (The Nun), is a silkscreen portrait of actress Ingrid Bergman, done in classic Warholian style.

The print references a character Bergman played in the 1945 movie “The Bells of St. Mary’s – though it is not of an actual still from the filmThe work, made in 1983, was one of a series of three different images Warhol made of Bergman on commission by a Swedish art gallery. According to the publisher, the idea was to create a “series of graphic prints to honor the memory of a great artist whom [Warhol] admired.” In total, Warhol made 48 unique prints that were published as a set.

Warhol made countless versions of each print, using different colors pallets and patterns. The particular work in Newcomb's collection is a Trial Proof, meaning it was not the final version of the print. While this work was published as part of the complete portfolio, the version that became the final rendering depicts Bergman’s hands surrounded by a blue box with a yellow, pink, and orange background rather than the different shades of blues and purples which are seen here.

The piece was gifted to the museum along with five other Warhol screen prints and a portfolio of his polaroids by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts in honor of the foundation’s 20th anniversary.
