Rufus Carrollton Harris served as president of Tulane University from 1937-1960, as well as president of Mercer College and chairman of a Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools accreditation committee. Harris supported and aided the integration of schools throughout the 1940s and 50s. This portrait of Harris, created during his time at Tulane, depicts the president leaning casually in an office chair, although his pose is contradicted by his formal robes. Through the window behind Harris can be seen a New Orleans oak.
