A notable figurehead and leader in patriot cause, John Adams first rose to prominence as a delegate to the First and Second Continental Congresses. As a continued contributor throughout the independence movement, Adams secured the position of George Washington’s vice president, later becoming Washington’s successor from 1797-1801. John Gadsby Chapman portraited the late president, a work that can be found within the Newcomb Art Museum’s collection.
