Materials of Africa: African Art in New Orleans Collections

Sculptural objects in this exhibition explore the full range of media used in African Art, including wood, gold, ivory, bronze, clay & textiles. These works also examine cultural & religious customs practiced throughout the African continent.

With accompanying symposium "Aesthetics & Representation in African Art" Moderated by Pamela Franco, Professor of Art History, Tulane University. Lectures included:
o "Vernacular in African Architecture" by Ikem Okoye, Professor of Architectural History, University of Delaware
o "Aesthetics, Domesticity & Women’s Wealth in a Hausa Town" by Adeline Masquelier, Professor of Anthropology, Tulane University
o "Exhibiting the Other: African Art in American Museums" by Sarah Clunis, Doctoral Candidate in History, University of Iowa
o "Problematics of “Elite” & “Popular” in Contemporary African Art" by Sidney Kasfir, Professor of Art History, Emory University
o "Performance & Representation of Ogun in Yorubaland" by Babatunde Lawal, Virginia Commonwealth University
o "Royal Arts & Court Traditions in Dahomey" by Suzanne Blier, Professor of Art History, Harvard University
