Michel Varisco (b. 1967, New Orleans, LA; lives and works in New Orleans, LA) is an artist whose practice incorporates photography, video, sculpture, printmaking, and site-specific installations. Her work explores human relationships to nature through architecture and engineered and wild environments, and places emphasis on the endangered wetlands and cultures affected by the loss of these lands. Varisco earned an MFA in photography from Tulane University in 1995 and a BA from Loyola University in 1990. She also studied in France at the LaCoste School of Art through the Cleveland Art Institute. She is currently an artist/mentor at NOCCA|Riverfront. In 2017, Varisco’s solar-powered public art installation Turning: Prayer Wheels for the Mississippi River was featured in the Prospect.4 New Orleans triennial at the Lafitte Greenway, where it remains permanently on view. Her work is also part of public, private and corporate collectionsa and has been recognized with awards and residencies from the Rauschenberg Foundation, the SURDNA Foundation, the Joan Mitchell Foundation, the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities and others.
