George Catlin
American
(1791 - 1872)

George Catlin, an American painter from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, was born on July 26, 1796. In his early youth, Catlin was noted to have had a fascination with Native American tribes. In 1830, Catlin left his professional career as a lawyer, visiting tribes across the United States. Akin to the popularity of portraiture in the 19th century, Catlin produced 470 portraits and portrayals of Native Americans and the unexplored West, for which he is most commonly known. At the end of his career, Catlin returned to his family in Jersey City, New Jersey, where he died on December 23, 1872.
